Alert:
Activists in Kenya arrested and detained for fighting against IMF
“The ILPS Africa and West Asia Regional Committee condemns the arrests and strongly supports the call for the release of Mwaivu Kaluka and Kinuthia Ndungu, CPM Kenya National Chairperson and Organizing Secretary respectively. They were arrested by the US-Ruto regime last November 21st for organizing a demonstration against the state’s role in the ongoing crises of imperialist plunder, economic depression, foreign-backed militarism, rampant femicide, and environmental devastation in Kenya. This is a blatant denial of the freedom of speech and assembly.
Their arrest is proof of the growing political repression in this East African country. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reports that since the Gen Z protests against the Finance Bill of 2024 started in June of this year, 60 protesters have been killed; 610 have been injured during protests and; 1,376 people, including 24 journalists, have been arbitrarily arrested. Seventy-four cases of enforced disappearance have likewise been reported with 26 persons still missing.”
